Area Information

Prior to the arrival of European settlers around 1740,the lands that would become Greenbrier County were used by the Shawnee and Cherokee Indians as hunting grounds. The importance of these lands to the Indians made the arrival of white settlers a contentious matter.

Raids were commonly staged by both Europeans and Natives during the latter part of the 18th century. As these confrontations wound down, Greenbrier County was officially chartered in 1782.

When Alderson was subsequently founded, it was named in honor of John Alderson, a minister who helped bring the Baptist church to the American frontier. In fact, he brought the first church to the Virginia valley and later established the Green Brier Baptist Church just west of the Alleghenies in 1772.

Average high temperatures in the area reach 82 degrees Fahrenheit in July and average lows get down to 18 degrees in January. The monthly precipitation average is 3.2 inches. Annual snowfall averages 51.6 inches.
